The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) started in 1961 as a College of the University of London. In 1963 it became a Constituent College of the University of East Africa.

It was formerly established in August 1970, as a National University, through the University of Dar es Salaam Act number 12 of 1970.

It was established with three main objectives, namely:

To transmit knowledge as a basis of action, from one generation to another;

To act as a centre for advancing frontiers of knowledge through scientific research; and

To meet the high level human resource needs of the Tanzanian society.

In 1961, the University started with the Faculty of Law. It expanded over the years with the establishment of the numerous Faculties and Institutes. It established a number of Colleges, some of which were later evolved into independent fully-fledged universities.

I am delighted to invite students, researchers, academicians and other interested stakeholders to the University of Dar es Salaam and its various campuses. We have more than 35,000 students of whom 5,000 are postgraduate and 300 are international. Our research programmes range across all disciplines be it agriculture, education, engineering, health, sociology, economics and laws. The university is keeping very close to wide interest within Tanzania and internationally to ensure relevance of our academic programmes and the continued excellence of the teaching, research and public service.

The University of Dar es Salaam is a unique community of students and staff dedicated to bringing out the best in all its members. Our aim is to provide the best possible environment for teaching, learning research and public services, and our track record of success is well known in East Africa, Africa and the rest of the world.

Since its establishment it has been at the forefront of nurturing leaders of the country and the African region. We will continue to ensure that our students’ years at this University will be filled with excitement and treasurable experiences. We also recognize that the quality of student experiences derives from more than academic study. As the oldest and prestigious university in Tanzania, we are doing our best to make sure we offer excellent teaching and high quality programmes and researches.

That is why the University encourages students to join and actively participate in activities of the Students’ Union and use the various sports and recreational facilities available including swimming pool, cricket, athletics, soccer fields, bird watching and multifunctional gym. Also there are several shopping, dining, health and standard accommodation facilities in the campus and in the vicinity.

These will enable students, staff and visitors realize full potential in the university life that derives to hope, confidence and satisfaction; hence motivated to become an agent of change to build a prosperous society in Tanzania, Africa and the world at large.

We are not only proud of the uncountable relationships we have with the international community, industries and research organizations, but also, we take pride in our current students and alumni, and we believe that every new student supplements our legacy of academic distinction.

  2. Hi just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the images
    aren’t loading properly. I’m not sure why but I think its
    a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different browsers and both show the same outcome.
