The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is Tanzania’s oldest and most prestigious state university. It is located 13 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam, on the 1,625-acre observation hill known as Mlimani in Kiswahili.

It began as the University College Dar es Salaam (UCD), an affiliate college of the University of London, on October 25, 1961.

APPLICATIONS INTO BACHELOR DEGREES WILL INVOLVE:

1. UNDERGRADUATE

The University of Dar es salaam (UDSM) offers various academic programmes leading to the award of certificates, diplomas, and degrees.

a) Direct entry Applicants
  •  Form Six applicants; and
  •  Form Six applicants with foreign certificates (e.g. Cambridge, IB-Diploma etc.) recognized by NECTA as equivalent to Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination.
b) Equivalent Qualifications Applicants
  •  Applicants with Diploma in teacher education;
  •  Applicants with Full Technician Certificates (FTC);
  •  Applicants who completed their Ordinary Diploma in technical education (NTA Level 6);
  •  All applicants with other diplomas (non-NTA level 6) from Tanzanian institutions recognized by TCU/NACTVET; and
  •  All applicants with diplomas from outside Tanzania which have been recognized by TCU/ NACTVET;
General Minimum Entry Requirements for Bachelor Degrees

(a) Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E.) or equivalent, with passes in FIVE approved subjects THREE of which must be at Credit level obtained prior to sitting for the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) or equivalent; AND (Direct Applicants)

(b) Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) with two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points in Two Subjects defining the admission into the respective programme.

1. For all Applicants except Graduates of 2014 and 2015: o A = 5; B = 4; C = 3; D = 2; E = 1; S = 0.5 and F = 0 point o The minimum Principal in this case is an ‘E’ grade.

2. For graduates of 2014 and 2015: o A = 5; B+ = 4; B = 3; C = 2; D = 1; E = 0.5 and F = 0 point. o The minimum Principal in this case is a ‘D’ grade.

3. For Arts programmes: o Principal Level Passes in appropriate subjects in the A.C.S.E.E. or equivalent with total points from three subjects not below 5

4. Principal level passes in Divinity/Islamic Knowledge are not counted

OR (Equivalent Applicants)

An appropriate equivalent Diploma of a GPA not less than 3.5 for Ordinary Diplomas or B average for Teacher Education and Health Related diplomas or Distinction for unclassified awards or B grade for Full Technician Certificates or Upper Second Class for non-NTA diplomas obtained from a college which is fully registered by TCU/ NACTVET and approved by the UDSM Senate.

MODE OF APPLICATION

All applications are processed through the Online Admission System of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM-OLAS) at www.udsm.admission.ac.tz.

Applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of ten thousand Tanzanian shillings (TZS 10,000) for Tanzanians. All payments may be done through mobile payment i.e. M-Pesa, Tigo-Pesa, Halopesa, T-pesa and Airtel-Money after obtaining a control number. Non-Tanzanians applying from abroad will be allowed to get through the application process without payment but they will be required to pay 10 USD upon arrival.

NB: *WARNING* It is an offence to submit false information when applying for admission. Applicants who will be discovered to have submitted fake certificates or any other false information will not be considered and appropriate legal actions will be taken against them.

2. POSTGRADUATE

The University of Dar es salaam offers various postgraduate programmes leading to the award of postgraduate diploma, masters and PhD degrees.

How to Apply at the University of Dar es Salaam

The University of Dar es Salaam’s (UDSM) long-awaited application forms are now available online.

In order to prepare for their 2022/2023 admissions, interested candidates can now use these digital application forms.

While the portal is still available, the institution welcomes all qualified candidates to apply for the various undergraduate programs.

Candidates should be aware that the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) has already announced the minimum entrance requirements for admissions as well as the application procedure at the University of Dar es Salaam(UDSM).

Surprisingly, even as the deadline approaches, many potential applicants are still having problems with the UDSM online application system.

An application must be submitted before the deadline for the November 2022 intake.

APPLICANTS WHO HAVE NEVER APPLIED BEFORE

STEP 1: CREATE AN ACCOUNT FOR ADMISSION:

Create an account in our system by clicking the (REGISTRATION) button on the UNDERGRADUATE tab.

Note: In order to create an account in the admissions system, you must provide the following information:

  • First
  • Surname
  • Mobile Phone Number
  • Email Address
  • Create a password that you will use to get into the admission system whenever you need to.
  • Type in the characters captcha, i.e. Captcha, and then click the register button at the bottom to create an account.

Note: Names as they appear in your form four certificate)

If you have successfully registered, an email will be sent to your email address; please check your email account.

Note: Your username is your email  address and Your Password is the password you had provided when creating your account.

The following fees are non-refundable:

Tanzanian applicants must generate a payment reference number (control number) through the UDSM-OLAS as described below. Non-refundable application fee is TZS 10,000/= for Tanzanians.

Foreign applicants may pay through banks (please refer section 4.3) or generate a control numbers

If you are based in Tanzania and pay the application fee as described below:

Use the reference number shown to pay application fee by using mobile money services i.e. Mpesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money etc.

Application Fee Payment Details:
  • TZS. 10,000.00 (Ten Thousand Only) for bachelor’s degrees for local students
  • TZS. 20,000.00 (Twenty Thousand Only) for Diploma and Certificate Programs for Local Students
  • 45.00 USD for international students (forty five US Dollar only)

Tanzanians: Pay the application cost via mobile money services like as Mpesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money, and others, using the reference number displayed in the admission system.

Foreign applicants: should submit their application fees to the University of Dar es Salaam, NBC Bank, Samora Branch, using the SWIFT code NLCBTZTX.

The following are the application fee payment procedures for local students using mobile money services: ie. Mpesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money etc

After receiving a control number, use the reference number and the amount stated there to pay the application cost.

Payment Information for the Application Fee:
If you have a Vodacom number,
  • Dial *150*00# to access your mpesa account.
  • Then select four LIPA kwa M-Pesa.
  • Then choose four. Weka namba ya kampuni namba ya kampuni namba ya kampuni
  • Then dial 888999 for a business number/Namba ya kampuni.
  • The ya kumbukumbu ya malipo reference number is: click the make payment button, take from your Admission system account,
  • The reference number is highlighted in red:

For individuals who have a Tigo phone number,
  • Dial *150*01# to open your Tigo-Pesa number.
  • Then select four LIPAs. PAY BILL, Bili
  • After that, choose three Weka namba ya kampuni.
  • Then dial 888999 for a business number/Namba ya kampuni.
  • Then, at the make payment button, enter your Reference number/ number ya kumbukumbu ya malipo, which you may get from your Admission system account.
  • The reference number is highlighted in red:

For individuals who have an Airtel phone number,
  • *150*60# is the Airtel Money Number.
  • Then pick five Lipia bili.

  • Then dial 888999 for the business number/Namba ya kampuni ni.
  • The ya kumbukumbu ya malipo reference number is: click the make payment button, take from your Admission system account,

  • The system will instantly update after payment, allowing you to proceed to step 3.
Step 3: ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

<> For Direct Entry applicants with both form IV and VI results from NECTA

<> Choose level, add index number and year of completion  E.g: Index no: S0110/0092/2014 level: O-LEVEL

<> Then click add sitting E.g. Index no: S0110/0088/2017 level: A-LEVEL

<> Then click add sitting > If you have multiple sittings then you can add all the sittings that you wish to be considered in the selection process.

<> For Equivalent applicants with form IV results from NECTA > Choose level, add index number and year of completion > Then upload your Diploma certificates in the system in PDF format

<> For applicants with foreign certificates, should acquire equivalence number from NECTA > Choose level, add equivalence number and year of completion

Step 4: PROGRAMME CHOICES

You are allowed to choose a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of fifteen (10) programmes.

Once the admission process is complete, you will be informed through your specified email address about the status of your application.

It is your responsibility to confirm your acceptance to join the University of Dar es Salaam. The confirmation process is also specified in the UDSM-OAS for those who will decide to accept the offer of admission to the University of Dar es Salaam.

Failure to confirm will imply that you have not accepted the offer and the slot will be made available to other applicants.

Applicants based Abroad

Applicants must ascertain themselves that they possess the minimum entry qualifications before paying application fee, which is non-refundable. Application fee for foreign students is USD 10 (ten US Dollars only).

International applicants shall pay their application fees upon arrival at the University of Dar es Salaam

Undergraduate Non-Degree Programmes

Like the undergraduate degree programmes, all University of Dar es Salaam undergraduate non-degree programmes are advertised in the local media (newspapers) and on the University website.

All applications should be submitted through the UDSM-OLAS for all non-degree programmes and the procedures for paying application fee
