The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is the oldest and premier public university in Tanzania. It is situated 13 kilometers on the western side of the city of Dar es Salaam, occupying 1,625 acres on the observation hill, famously known as Mlimani in Kiswahili.
It was established on 25th October 1961 as the University College Dar es Salaam (UCD), an affiliate college of the University of London. It was temporarily hosted in the premises belonging to Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) located in Lumumba Street, Dar es Salaam from its establishment up to 1964 when it was moved to the current location at the Hill.
At its inception, it had only one faculty, the Faculty of Law, with 13 students among them one female, Julie Manning. In 1963, it became a constituent college of the University of East Africa together with Makerere University College in Uganda and Nairobi University College in Kenya. UDSM became a full-fledged university on 1st July 1970 through Act No. 12 of 1970.

UDSM MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS 2021/2022
UDSM MERIT UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2021/2022
The University of Dar es Salaam is pleased to announce 62 merit
based scholarships, 52 for undergraduate and 10 for postgraduate
students (at the Master’s Level) for the 2021/2022 academic year.
Successful candidates will register for studies at the University of Dar
es Salaam and her constituent’s colleges (the Dar es Salaam University
College of Education [DUCE] and Mkwawa University College of
Education [MUCE]).
1. UNDERGRADUATE MERIT SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY
The applicant:
(i) Must be Tanzanian,
(ii) Must have outstanding/excellent performance at the Ordinary (‘O’) Level of Secondary Education and with at least 12 points in THREE subjects at the Advanced (‘A’) level of Secondary Education or equivalent (Note: A = 5; B = 4; C = 3; D = 2; E =
1; S = 0.5 and F = 0 point),
(iii) Must be admitted to the University of Dar es Salaam,
(iv) Must not be older than 25 years at the time of application,
(v) Candidates applying for the UDSM Merit scholarships are encouraged to simultaneously apply for bursaries through the Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB). However, scholarship awardees will be required to relinquish the HESLB
support, and
(vi) The scholarship award is tenable for one academic year and renewable for successive academic years on condition the recipient maintains a minimum GPA of 3.8.

Scope of Scholarship
The scholarship will cover tuition fee, meals and accommodation. All the Merit Scholarship awardees are guaranteed accommodation at the UDSM’s hostels throughout their Scholarship period. Special requirements and final year projects will also be supported as specified in their respective programmes.
2. POSTGRADUATE MERIT SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY
Application Requirements
The Applicant must meet programme specific admission requirements as found in the Postgraduate Prospectus 2020/2021 on the UDSM website. In addition, the applicant must:
(i) Be a citizen of Tanzania,
(ii) Be a graduate of the University of Dar es Salaam,
(iii) Have obtained admission to an appropriate Master’s
programme,
(iv) Not be older than 30 years at the time of application,
(v) Be prepared to accept duties as a postgraduate teaching
assistant,
(vi) Have completed his/her first degree within two years at the
time of scholarship application, and
(vii) Have an undergraduate degree GPA of 3.8 (on a 5-point scale)
or higher.

academic achievements, character and personality, and
4. A one page motivation letter.
Scope of Scholarship
The scholarship will cover tuition fee, stipend, books and stationery as well as research costs as stipulated in the University of Dar es Salaam Fee Structure.
Applications for the Merit Scholarships will be open from 13th September 2021 to 5
th October 2021.
Selection and awarding outcomes will be communicated within four week after the application deadline.
