Manyara Region was established by Government Proclamation no. 367 issued on July 27, 2002 and published in the Government Gazette on August 2, 2002 after the division of the Arusha Region which before and during the Independence period was known as the Northern Province. Arusha Region officially started using the name in 1963.
Among the districts that formed the Region are Mbulu and Maasailand which are mostly in the current Manyara Region.
The districts were divided as follows:
– Mbulu District established Hanang District in 1969 and Hanang established Babati in 1985, while Maasailand District was divided into Kiteto District in 1974 which was also divided and established Simanjiro District in 1993. In addition, after the division for Arusha Region, Mbulu, Hanang ‘, Babati, Kiteto and Simanjiro Districts formed Manyara Region.
Manyara Region is one of 31 regions in Tanzania with postcode number 27000. Manyara Region is bordered by Singida and Shinyanga Regions to the west, Dodoma Region to the south, Tanga Region to the east and Arusha and Kilimanjaro Regions to north.
Manyara regional headquarters are located in Babati Mjini.
Population, Manyara Region has a total population of 1,425,131 out of which 717,085 are Men and 708,046 are women (2002 census) This figure is found in the following districts (population in parentheses in 2002): Babati (303,013), Hanang (205,133), Mbulu (237,882), Simanjiro (141,676) and Kiteto (152,757).
The census shows that it is one of the most populous regions of Tanzania. It is also one of the regions with the lowest prevalence of AIDS.
